Here is our story.

In January 2011, after years of being kicked out of commercial gyms throughout the Des Moines area, a group of like-minded iron renegades came together to form 22nd Street Barbell. Founded on old school powerlifting principles, the team went underground (literally) to grind out heavy rep, after heavy rep in a training facility proudly referred to as “the dungeon.”

The atmosphere of 22nd Street is a direct rebellion against weight rooms lined with mirrors where people perform bicep curls as Adult Contemporary radio plays of the sound system. 22nd Street Barbell is not your mother’s “health club.”

We are a family forged in iron, a team of people driven by a singular goal…..to get as strong as humanly possible. This culture is what has put 22nd Street Barbell on the map as a well respected strength training facility where beginners to world record holders train.
